ALBIR (Alfas)
The first thing you will notice about Albir is no high-rise buildings or hotel blocks.
Albir has grown from a small community in the last few years into a great holiday destination. Attracting visitors from far-flung places who soon
decided to make it their permanent home. It has its own character yet blends in with the rest of the Costa Blanca.
More and more businesses and new shops open every day. At present, Albir has five large supermarkets, Albir, Eroski, Lidl, Mendoza and the
recently opened Mercadona. Mendoza carry a few British food products so you do not have to go without your favorite things.
New Albir, well some newly built apartment blocks are situated on the lower reaches which were once planted with orange groves. The Rio Seco
riverbed divides this area into north and south. The river only appeared during heavy rain and caused quite destructive flooding so the local council
have taken care of the problem and converted the stretch of riverbed into a boulevard (pictured right.) Walking along the riverbed until you reach the beach is very pleasant and is lined with shrubs and trees which provide a Pleasant tropical feel.
Surrounding Albir is the Sierra Helada (meaning Frozen Mountain), which is a protected nature reserve. Albir beach is a pebble beach with clear
water and has been awarded the blue flag of the European Community for the quality of its water, available facilities and for having all kinds of
events on and around the beach.
One of the best Views of the Mediterranean can be seen from Albir. The main promenade is called, "Paseo de las Estrellas" (Stars Promenade) As
Alfaz del Pí holds an annual national film festival every July. The town decided to copy the Hollywood initiative of laying paving stones along the
promenade and dedicating them to national film stars.
During the summer months, a small market of local craft and artwork trades at the upper end of the sea front where you can purchase original
jewelry, leather goods and souvenirs. Albir esplanade attracts everybody for pleasant strolls along the seafront. Roller skating used to be allowed
along the front but has since been banned although there are two children's playgrounds on the beach itself.
You can begin a trip from the Albir beach to the lighthouse of Albir. At the edge of the Sierra Helada, a winding road emerges through a tunnel
which will take you to Punta Bombarda (Bombarda Point) as far as the Albir Lighthouse. Now closed to vehicles, it is perhaps, one of the most
popular Costa Blanca walks with great views and can be enjoyed by the old and young alike.
